Some patients require extraction of all the teeth on either (or both) of their upper or lower arches and choose to replace those extracted teeth with an immediate denture.
Once extractions have been completed, these patients can expect considerable change to their oral structures. In fact, studies show that within the first year after extractions, an estimated 50% of jawbone width will be lost, 30% of which occurs within the first 12 weeks. (Bone loss eventually slows down but will continue year after year.) As the jawbone changes, the gums that cover that bone will also change shape.
Unfortunately, the shape of a denture will not change as your jawbone and gums shrink. This means that as time goes on – and especially in the first year following extractions – your denture will start to feel looser. For these patients, tissue conditioners can help to restore comfort, fit, and function temporarily and until bone loss tapers off and a denture reline is warranted.
What is a tissue conditioner?
A tissue conditioner is a temporary liner that is applied to the tissue side of the denture to help refit your denture while your mouth changes. Most patients will need tissue conditioners periodically through their first year of wearing a denture.
Your new tissue conditioner has been fabricated using high quality materials. To get the best use out of it, you must care for it properly.
Care for the First 72 hours (3 Days)
Your tissue conditioner requires time to fully cure. It will be susceptible to damage within the first 72 hours of placement.
To minimize the possibility of damage during the first 3 days:
- Avoid heavy pressure (including chewing and biting) for the first several hours
- Do not brush the tissue conditioner
- Clean your denture by running it under cool water to remove any debris
- If necessary, remove stubborn food particles gently with a soft cloth or very soft brush
Care After the Initial 3 Days
Daily Cleaning
- Clean the denture after meals
- A soft brush, liquid soap, and cold water can be used for cleaning
- Always rinse well with water after use and after cleaning
Daily Soaking
- Soak your denture overnight in cool water or cleaning solution specifically formulated for tissue conditioners, soft liners, or implants
- Regular cleaning solutions can break down and damage tissue conditioners, leading to a degradation in denture fit
- If your tissue conditioner is damaged by improper care, a fee will be charged to replace it
DO NOT clean your denture:
- With very hot or boiling water
- With toothpaste
- With bleach or harsh chemicals
- In the dishwasher or microwave
Important Reminders
- Sore spots can occur following the placement of tissue conditioners. Adjustments may be required.
- DO NOT try to adjust your denture on your own. Please call and schedule an appointment with your denturist.
- Annual checkups are recommended to assess the health of your oral environment and fit of your denture.
- If you have remaining natural teeth, it is important to keep them healthy – continue to schedule regular cleanings with your dentist or dental hygienist.
